📲 Gamified Learning Modules for CPA Exam

IDEA: The Certified Public Accounting exam is a series of four grueling, meticulous exams taken over about 2 years. They are critically important to an accountant’s career as they cannot practice as a CPA until all exams are passed. There are countless preparatory methods both class led or self-taught and equally as many different variations of study materials. As someone who considered sitting for the CPA exam after graduating with an accounting degree, I can say confidently there are very few options for people who need rewarding and engaging ways to make learning tax regulations fun.

PRODUCT: Create an RPG iOS or Android game where the only way to obtain currency to advance in the mission is by answering questions correctly from CPA study materials. Partner with a CPA prep company to get questions and supplementary learning modules. Release a basic version of the game with open source questions, but make premium access to the game dependent on having a license issued from the prep company. Include 4 different versions or “worlds” depending on which exam the user is studying for.

MVP: Basic RPG demo with CPA exam questions.

REVENUE MODEL: Freemium or commission based. Get kickbacks from CPA prep companies for promoting their materials.

EXIT STRATEGY: Sell to a CPA prep company like Becker or Gleim for 4x revenue.

🚨 Startup News 🗞️

Publication: Forbes

Summary: In “Cracking the Startup Funding Code,” Lilian Raji argues that CMOs (and founders) should understand four financing archetypes that shape how investors perceive a startup. These archetypes are based on how companies balance growth vs. sustainability:

  1. Scrappy: Lean and frugal, focused on survival more than rapid scale.

  2. Aggressive: High-growth, but burning cash quickly, trading long-term stability for rapid expansion.

  3. Durable: Balanced growth + financial discipline, the most attractive to investors.

  4. Stagnant: Low growth and weak financial controls, stuck in a dangerous limbo.

Raji advises CMOs to identify which archetype their startup fits into. That clarity helps shape fundraising strategy, messaging, and resource allocation to appeal to the right investors at the right time.

Spin: Knowing your archetype is incredibly important for getting funding from investors. Identifying your archetype and explaining how venture capital will help you reach our goals and get you to “durable” status will maximize your chances:

  1. Scrappy: Explain how VC money will get you out of survival mode and stabilize your company’s foundation to enable growth.

  2. Aggressive: Maybe exactly the type of company you should be. Rapidly expanding companies like Uber were like this, but give a plan to get to scale and begin working towards profitability.

  3. Durable: Emphasize this archetype with your financials and show how VC money will make you even larger, but also more sustainable.

  4. Stagnant: Unveil a plan to enhance your financial controls and explain how investment dollars will be used wisely to strengthen the company and begin to grow.

Summary: At TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, the startup competition Startup Battlefield 2025 awarded its grand prize to Glīd, a logistics firm using hybrid-electric vehicles and software to streamline cargo-container movement from ships to railheads. Glīd beat around 199 other startups to claim the $100,000 prize. Its hardware-software solution addresses long-standing inefficiencies in container logistics and taps into increasing pressure for supply-chain innovation and sustainability. The win places Glīd among past notable winners of the competition and could help accelerate investment and momentum in its mission to modernize global freight flow.

Spin: We have said it before in this newsletter and we will say it again: until we can figure out teleportation, logistics companies will always play. During a very tricky time for international trade with tariffs and tension between trading partners, I am very impressed with Glīd’s ability to sell the vision for the future of logistics. Keep an eye on them for future expansion and even an acquisition from UPS or Amazon.

🐶 🐈 Pet Mood Translator

IDEA: I have a Goldendoodle who may be the moodiest 3 year old on the planet. I made the mistake of teaching him the ‘speak’ command as part of his treat routine and now he just barks at me whenever he wants something. The problem? I don’t know what the heck he’s talking about.

There needs to be an app that records analyzes a dog or cat’s noises and translates them into moods or feelings like hungry, needs exercise, needs to potty, wants a treat, or tired and wants to sleep with his dragon on the couch with multiple pillows.
